The Bud Billiken Parade has been held the second Saturday of every August since 1929. Begun by Robert S. Abbott, founder of the Chicago Defender newspaper, the parade was intended to give The Bud Billiken® Parade, the largest African American parade in the United States, spans generations of families across the country who have participated since its inception. With education as its foundation, the parade takes place at the close of summer—Bud Billiken® kicks off the school year with high energy and enthusiasm. Bud Billiken was a youth-club mascot for The Chicago Defender, and was created in 1923, and is known more contemporarily as the inspiration for the yearly parade of the same name held shortly before the start of the school year.

WHO IS BUD BILLIKEN? The name Bud was a pen name for the junior section of the Chicago Defender newspaper in the 1920’s and 30’s. The Billiken was a very popular Chinese mythical caricature that represented a protector of children. There used to be a Bud Billiken Club that expanded all over the country where children could connect as pen pals.

While dining  band performances, the United States Air Force Honor Guard marched in a precise synchronized rhythm during the 85th Annual Bud Billiken Parade on Aug. BWLA members came out to show our presence by walking in the 90th Annual Bud Billiken Parade.
